LUCENA CITY – A 22-year-old security guard died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck along the Maharlika Highway in Gumaca town in Quezon province on Saturday, May 31, police said.
The Quezon police on Sunday, June 1, said that motorcyclist “Jerald,” a resident of Calauag, Quezon, attempted to overtake another vehicle in a curved section of the highway in Barangay (village) San Vicente around 5:45 a.m. but lost control of his motorcycle.
The wayward vehicle consequently collided with an oncoming aluminum van truck driven by “Francis.”

With the strong impact, Jerald, despite wearing a crash helmet, sustained fatal injuries and died on the way to the hospital.
The police found out in initial investigations that the rider only had a student driver permit. This meant the permit holder is only authorized to drive a vehicle with a licensed driver present, according to the Land Transportation Office.
Police are conducting further investigations. /jpv
