MANILA, Philippines — Six volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Thursday.

This is lower than Wednesday’s recorded total of 16 volcanic earthquakes, according to Phivolcs.

The agency’s latest monitoring report also showed that Kanlaon Volcano emitted 1,756 tons of sulfur dioxide in a day, significantly lower than the previous measurement of 4,633 tons.

Despite this decrease, Phivolcs said the volcano continues to exhibit a high level of volcanic unrest, with Alert Level 3 still in effect.

Phivolcs also reported that the volcano generated a voluminous 700-meter-high plume drifting south, southwest, and northwest, while noting that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated.

The agency warned the public of potential hazards, including the following:

  • Sudden explosive eruptions
  • Lava flows or effusions
  • Ashfall
  • Pyroclastic density currents
  • Rockfalls
  • Lahars during heavy rainfall

Phivolcs also reminded residents within a six-kilometer radius of Kanlaon to evacuate from the summit area and prohibited the flying of any aircraft near the volcano./mcm
