MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area (LPA) spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday may enter the country’s monitoring area within 24 to 48 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
In its 5 a.m. forecast, Pagasa Weather Specialist Chenel Dominguez said the LPA was last seen 1,255 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.
It was also forecast to strengthen the southwest monsoon, or habagat.
“Right now, the chances of it becoming a typhoon are still low. But if we can see it in our satellite image, the trough, or its extension, would bring scattered rains, especially in the eastern section of Visayas and Mindanao,” Dominguez said.

The trough of the LPA is expected to persist over Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte, where cloudy skies with scattered rain showers are forecast.
Meanwhile, the habagat continues to affect the Luzon region, particularly its western section.
For Thursday’s weather, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers are expected over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, and Bataan due to the effects of the habagat.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers, with a high chance of rain, especially in the afternoon and evening.
The habagat is also expected to bring a high chance of rain over Palawan, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
As for the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao, clear weather is expected, but localized thunderstorms may occur, especially in the afternoon and evening./mcm
