MANILA, Philippines 鈥 New Philippine National Police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III vowed to strengthen the Internal Affairs Service (IAS), the PNP鈥檚 watchdog against erring officers.

Torre said this in response to a question about internal cleansing initiatives during a press briefing after he took command of the PNP in a ceremony at聽Camp Crame on Monday.

鈥淲e just would like our fellow citizens, if you see any wrongdoing by our police officers, to know that the Internal Affairs Service is there,鈥 Torre said.

鈥淲e are going to strengthen and I will really focus the Internal Affairs Services on investigation and prosecution,鈥 he added.

His predecessor, now former PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, previously expressed hopes that the nation鈥檚 next top cop would continue reforms to the national police force.

In a speech after stepping down as PNP chief, Marbil touted his internal cleansing campaign, resulting in the resolution of over 3,400 cases, the suspension of more than 1,300 police officers, and the dismissal of more than 1,100 erring cops. /das
