MANILA, Philippines — A Parañaque City police officer was awarded medals and given financial assistance after he was wounded in the head and chest with a butcher knife while responding to a report of a public disturbance.
In a ceremony on Monday, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil gave Staff Sgt. Carlo Navarro the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (Wounded Personnel Medal) and the Medalya ng Kagitingan (Medal for Heroism) for this response to the incident.

In a message after the ceremony, Navarro detailed that he and other police officers initially found the suspect holding a broken glass bottle.
The suspect attempted to flee, but Navarro and his colleagues chased him down. It was then that the suspect found the butcher knife.
“I was thinking he might take someone hostage and worsen the situation. That’s why I tried to catch his attention,” Navarro said in Filipino.
The suspect then struck Navarro with the knife, who then tried to subdue and disarm him.
Marbil praised Navarro, saying in a message at the ceremony: “This is a good example of what police operational procedure should be.”/mr
