MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) instructed the maintenance provider of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) to speed up its compatibility checks of 48 unused trains.
“I’ve spoken to them about this several times already and I gave them a deadline to give me a report and a straight answer: what do we need to make these trains run?” DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said in a statement on Thursday.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited the MRT-3 facilities last weekend.
“Sumitomo Corporation will meticulously go through their processes and make sure that these trains, if usable, will be used safely for the benefit of our commuters,” Dizon added.

Dizon said the unused trains can run on MRT-3 tracks but still have to undergo safety checks before being deployed.
