MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) will provide free rides on June 12 in celebration of the 127th Philippine Independence Day, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Thursday.

In separate Facebook posts, the DOTr said free rides on the LRT-1 and LRT-2 on June 12 will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“This free ride is a sign of gratitude and a commemoration of our freedom,” Light Rail Transit Authority Administrator Atty. Hernando Cabrera said in a Facebook post for the announcement on LRT-2 free rides.

“We wholeheartedly salute our heroes for their courage, sacrifice, and unparalleled love for the country. May we always keep the spirit of their heroism in our hearts,” he added.

The DOTr earlier announced that the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 will also offer free rides to passengers on June 12.

June 12, which falls on a Thursday this year, is observed annually as a regular holiday to celebrate the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spanish rule./mcm/mr
