MANILA, Philippines — Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III will “drive transformation” in the Philippine National Police (PNP) as its next chief, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Thursday.
Remulla also said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s choice was based on a thorough evaluation of Torre’s qualifications and notable track record.
“We are confident his leadership will drive transformation, innovation, and strengthen the PNP’s mandate to serve and protect,” the interior secretary added.
The PNP is an attached agency of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced Torre as the next PNP chief during a Palace briefing on Thursday afternoon.

Torre led the high-profile operation that arrested alleged sex offender and religious sect leader Apollo Quiboloy after a 16-day stand-off in Davao City.
He was also the ground commander of the police team that arrested former President Rodrigo Duterte and turned him over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands last March.
“The DILG stands ready to work with him in advancing internal reforms, fighting illegal drugs and crime, and enhancing police visibility,” Remulla said.
Torre will replace incumbent PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, who is set to retire on June 7.
Bersamin said the turnover of command will take place on Monday, June 2./mcm
