TAGBILARAN CITY – A celestial spectacle lit up the skies of Bohol as a rare sun halo formed a ring around the sun on Wednesday, May 28.
The sun halo was visible at 11 a.m. and lasted for almost half an hour.
Residents in Tagbilaran City and the neighboring towns of Corella, Dauis, and Panglao witnessed the phenomenon.
The Farmers’ Almanac said that halos are the result of the refraction or bending of sunlight or moonlight by thin, high, and icy cirrus clouds.
These clouds appear at altitudes above 20,000 feet, where air temperatures are always below the freezing point, even during the middle of summer.
It added that the most commonly seen halo is the single one, making a 22-degree circle around the sun or moon, often brighter on the top and bottom.
Many residents were in awe of the phenomenon.
“What a rare and spectacular sight in the skies above,” said Charles Pesquira, 24, a resident of Booy town.
Other people saw the sun halo as a sign of divinity.
Starhawk, who requested to be identified by this name, said that a sun halo is often seen as a sign of spiritual connection and divine presence.
He said it can symbolize a bridge between heaven and earth, representing God’s light or grace shining down.
The last recorded sun halo in Tagbilaran was on October 21, 2024./apl/abc
