Kanlaon rocked by 31 volcanic earthquakes in 24 hours – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Tuesday that 31 volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island over the past 24 hours.
In its latest monitoring report, Phivolcs said Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 as it continues to exhibit a high level of volcanic unrest.

Kanlaon Volcano exhibited continuous degassing, releasing 1,124 tons of sulfur dioxide in a day. The volcano also generated a moderate plume rising 700 meters high, which drifted northwest, Phivolcs said.
The volcano’s edifice remains inflated, Phivolcs added.
The agency warned the public about the following potential hazards:
- sudden explosive eruptions
- lava flows or effusions
- ashfall
- pyroclastic density currents
- rockfalls
- lahars during heavy rainfall

Phivolcs also reminded residents within a six-kilometer radius of Kanlaon Volcano to evacuate the summit area. The agency added that flying any aircraft near the volcano is strictly prohibited./mcm/abc
