Former CBCP secretary-general Cariño passes away at 86

MANILA, Philippines — Former Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) secretary-general Nestor Cariño passed away on Saturday morning.
Cariño died at 11:15 a.m. at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, the Diocese of Legazpi announced in a social media post.
“He will be laid to rest at Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral, Legazpi City. Details of the wake and funeral rites will be announced in due course,” the diocese said.
“We commend his soul to the mercy of God and ask the clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese to pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” it added.
Cariño was CBCP secretary-general from 1986 to 2003.
He was the fifth bishop of Legazpi from 2005 until his retirement in 2007.

Prior to this, he served as the auxiliary bishop of Legazpi and Daet and as the bishop of Borongan, according to the CBCP.
Cariño was born in Albay on September 8, 1938 and was ordained a priest in 1961. /jpv
