Laoag City, 2 other areas to hit 45°C heat index

MANILA, Philippines — Laoag City in Ilocos Norte and two other areas in the country are expected to reach the highest heat index at 45°C on Saturday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In its updated bulletin, Pagasa said that Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, Dagupan City in Pangasinan, and Aparri in Cagayan will experience the dangerous category of heat index. Under this category, the heat index ranges from 42°C to 51°C.

Pagasa warned that under this heat index category, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible while continued exposure to the sun can lead to heat stroke.

The Department of Health earlier advised the public to dress comfortably, stay hydrated, and seek cool spaces to avoid the risk of getting heat-related illnesses.

Meanwhile, Pagasa said that the onset of the rainy season may be declared in early June. Pagasa explained that this is because the easterlies, or the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, will continue to prevail in the coming days. /das
