MANILA, Philippines — Mindanao will continue experiencing rains due to the effect of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday.
Based on the 5 a.m. update of Pagasa, weather specialist Benison Estareja said that aside from heavy rains, ITCZ may also bring thunderstorms to Mindanao.
“ITCZ refers to the line where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet. Thus, heavy rains are still expected to persist,” Estareja said in Filipino.
Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions against possible flooding or landslides.

Meanwhile, the easterlies, which refer to the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, continue to affect the Luzon and Visayas regions.
Estareja noted that in the morning and noon, hot and fair weather conditions will be experienced in Northern and Central Luzon, while partly cloudy skies will occur in Southern Luzon. Cloudy skies with isolated rains and thunderstorms, meanwhile, may occur in most parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, in the afternoon to evening.
“Winds from the east section of the country have a high level of moisture that is expected to bring isolated rain showers or thunderstorms,” Estareja said.
Fair weather with a chance of isolated rain showers and thunderstorms is also forecast to persist in Visayas from morning to evening.
No typhoons or low-pressure areas within or outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) are currently being monitored, Estareja said.
He added that no typhoon is expected to develop or enter PAR in the rest of May. /das/abc
