Manila Water launches major Wastewater Recovery Project at Cardona Treatment Plant

The wastewater recovery project at the Cardona Treatment Plant will treat and reuse over 6MLD of brine wastewater. This underscores Manila Water’s commitment to environmental stewardship by providing efficient and sustainable water treatment solutions.

Manila Water is undertaking a significant wastewater recovery project at the Cardona Treatment Plant to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize the risk of brine pipe breakage.

This P13-million initiative involves the installation of a 200-millimeter diameter High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline with concrete encasement, along with a 110-millimeter diameter HDPE pipeline spanning six linear meters. These pipelines will transport treated brine wastewater within the facility, which will then be reused for water treatment processes.

A key component of the project is the supply and installation of four units of 1.5MLD-7.5kw submersible pumps, new wastewater recovery pumps (1-4), valves, and other essential equipment. These elements are crucial for the efficient handling and transportation of brine wastewater during treatment.

To further optimize plant operations, the project includes the installation of new Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) in the existing spare feeder compartment (1MCC5A), a local control panel, and a new Motor Control Center (MCC) for the new pumps. These installations will be integrated into the Cardona Treatment Plant’s SCADA system.

Additionally, control and automation devices will be installed in the existing PLC panel and integrated into the facility-wide automation systems, enabling real-time monitoring, control, and data collection for enhanced operational efficiency.

Upon completion in September 2025, the project will treat and reuse over 6MLD of brine wastewater. The advanced automation systems will streamline operations, reduce costs, improve treatment performance, and mitigate environmental impact.

“The wastewater recovery project at the Cardona Treatment Plant does not only enhance our efficiency and reduces costs but also plays a crucial role in minimizing environmental impact. We are proud to take this step towards sustainable wastewater management and look forward to the positive outcomes it will bring,” Manila Water Communication Affairs Group Director Jeric Sevilla said.

This effective recovery initiative at the Cardona Treatment Plant underscores Manila Water’s commitment to environmental stewardship by providing efficient and sustainable water treatment solutions.
