BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Negros Occidental provincial government has earmarked an initial P10 million as its counterpart subsidy for the sale of rice at P20 per kilogram, an official said.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said on Friday that the amount would be replenished as needed.
“We are already preparing the groundwork to commence the sale of rice at P20 a kilo,” Diaz said.
He said the province is also working with local irrigators’ associations to purchase rice to be included in the program.

Department of Agriculture Director Jose Albert Barrogo of the Negros Island Region said the subsidized rice would be available to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, indigent residents, and beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
“Under the program, each family can buy 10 kilos of P20 rice per week,” Barrogo said. /lzb
