Magnitude 5.1 quake hits off Negros Occidental town

MANILA, Philippines — Aftershocks are expected from magnitude 5.1 earthquake that hit off the shore of a Negros Occidental town on Saturday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its earlier bulletin, Phivolcs raised the earthquake’s magnitude to 5.2 while its depth was updated from the initial 10 kilometers to five km.
The Phivolcs said that the earthquake’s center was located west of Sipalay City in Negros Occidental at 8:32 a.m.
The state seismologist noted that the quake’s strength was reportedly felt in the following areas:
Intensity IV: Sipalay City, Cauayan, and Candoni in Negros Occidental
Intensity III: La Castellana, Silay City, Bago City, Pontevedra, Polopandan, Kabankalan City, Himamaylan City, and Valladoid in Negros Occidental
Intensity II: Cadiz City, Negros Occidental; Bacolod City, Bais City, and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental; Hamtic, San Jose, and Anini-y in Antique; and Nabas, Aklan
Intensity I: Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Barili, Samboan, and Carcar City, Cebu
The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Its instrumental intensities, or the measurement of the ground shaking, are recorded in the following areas:
Intensity IV: Sipalay City, Negros Occidental
Intensity II: Anini’y, Antique; Argao City, Cebu; Iloilo City; La Carlota City, Negros Occidental
Intensity I: Culasi and San Jose City, Antique; Roxas City, Capiz; Nueva Valencia, Guimaras; Passi City, Iloilo
Meanwhile, Phivolcs noted that there was no expected damage from the earthquake. /das
