MANILA, Philippines — The weather bureau on Sunday said it is monitoring a low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine area of responsibility that may affect parts of Mindanao.

As of 3 p.m. on Sunday, the LPA was located 635 kilometers east-southeast of Davao City and developed within the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) that was affecting Mindanao, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Weather specialist Veronica Torres said the ITCZ, which is the area where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet, is expected to bring cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms over Mindanao and Palawan.

The LPA has the potential to be the first typhoon of the 2025 season in the Pacific.

In February, a tropical depression developed in the West Philippine Sea but quickly dissipated. According to Pagasa’s list of typhoon names for the year, the first typhoon of the season will be called “Auring” when it comes. —Gillian Villanueva
