MANILA, Philippines — The low-pressure area (LPA) being monitored inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has a “high” chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
In its Thursday morning bulletin, Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said that as of 3 a.m., the LPA was last located 235 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan.
“It has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, and it is moving upwards or north, northwest. And we are also seeing that its movement is becoming faster,” Castañeda said.
“Due to this, there is a possibility that when it becomes a full-fledged tropical cyclone, it will be close to the Taiwan area, and there is also a possibility that its stay will be short or will dissipate within less than 48 hours,” she added.

The LPA is expected to bring rain to parts of Extreme Northern Luzon this Thursday.
Castañeda also said the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, is forecast to continue bringing rain to most parts of Luzon, the Visayas, and the western portion of Mindanao.
“So a reminder to our countrymen, when we go out, especially those who will be participating in the celebrations for Independence Day, let’s not forget our protection from these rains and also continue to be careful and alert to the threat of floods and landslides,” she added.

Meanwhile, the tropical storm outside the PAR, internationally named “Wutip,” was last located 1,025 kilometers west of Northern Luzon. It continues to move away from the PAR, and it no longer has any direct effect on any part of the country, Castañeda said./mcm
