It’s not just the President, among members of the Duterte family, who is against the proposed divorce law.

His eldest daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, is also opposed to it.

At the military’s change of command ceremony on Wednesday, President Duterte greeted Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez who was in the audience, and identified him as the “proponent of the divorce law.”

But the President told Alvarez, his friend, that he could not support him in this endeavor.

“I am sorry but I cannot follow your… My daughter is not happy with that,” he said.

He asked Alvarez to talk the matter out with his daughter.

Earlier, Malacañang said President Duterte was not in favor of the divorce law because it would adversely affect the children.

Spouses who would be neglected after the divorce would also lose their right to file cases against their spouses, it added.

Alvarez and Sara earlier had a tiff over the speaker’s comments describing her regional party, the Hugpong ng Pagbabago, as part of the opposition. — LEILA B. SALAVERRIA
