Doctor dies after treating patients during extended nightshift

An emergency doctor in China died after he collapsed and was attended to in the same hospital where he served his nightshift.

The doctor, 43-year-old Guo Qingyuan, was struck with chest pain, palpitations, and had difficulty breathing as he wrapped up his duty at the Qinghai University Affiliated Hospital on Wednesday, reports Xining Evening ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV.

Guo attended to at least 38 patients during his shift which was set to end at 8:30 p.m. However, he stayed until 11:40 p.m. to properly turnover his work, reports the China ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Service. The ER doctor received four hours of intensive care when he suffered from a seizure and died.

Last Dec. 29, another doctor in China collapsed from a stroke and died following an 18-hour shift. Zhao Bianxiang, also 43, was the head of respiratory medicine at the Yuci District People’s Hospital in Jinzhong City.
