16,000 of 20,000 new teaching positions already taken – Marcos

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 16,000 teaching positions opened in May have already been filled — just in time for the opening of classes for school year 2025–2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Monday.
He made the announcement in a press statement issued after inspecting the conduct of the first day of classes at Epifanio delos Santos Elementary School in Manila.

“I was explaining to our teachers for their benefit, so we can reduce their workload and lessen their administrative duties, we will be hiring 20,000 new teachers,” he told reporters in Filipino.
“As of now, out of the 20,000, the Department of Education has already hired 16,000 new teachers,” he added.

The 16,000 teaching positions, which make up the first batch of a total of 20,000 positions, were approved by the Department of Budget and Management last month.
In the same month, the budget department also authorized the hiring of 10,000 non-teaching positions for DepEd. /atm
