MANILA, Philippines — Nine volcanic earthquakes and 1,724 tons of sulfur dioxide were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Friday.
The nine volcanic earthquakes recorded on Friday were higher than the seven quakes logged in Phivolcs’ report the previous day.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs’ latest 24-hour monitoring showed that Kanlaon emitted 1,724 tons of sulfur dioxide—fewer than the previous record of 2,014 tons.

The volcano generated a moderate 1,200-meter-high plume that drifted northeast, according to Phivolcs’ latest monitoring.
The state seismology agency also reported that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Kanlaon, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.
