Impeach court opens, but raps ‘remanded’ to House

MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis Escudero has appointed Atty. Reginald Tongol as spokesperson of the impeachment court.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Escudero said Tongol’s appointment takes effect immediately and will remain in place at least until the convening of the 20th Congress. 

“His role will be crucial in ensuring that information surrounding the impeachment proceedings is communicated accurately, responsibly, and in a timely manner that fosters public trust,” said Escudero. 

“[He]brings an exceptional blend of legal expertise and media acumen to the impeachment court. His deep understanding of key issues and his commitment to transparent and responsible communication make him the ideal spokesperson for this critical process,” he added. 

Tongol continues to practice law through his own firm, Regie Tongol & Associates Law and Communication, where he is recognized as a sought-after speaker and consultant on data privacy, government media relations, social media responsibility, crisis communications, entertainment law, and creative industries regulation. 

He has also worked previously at the Office of the President and the House of Representatives.

In an unexpected turn of events, the senator-judges took their oath and subsequently agreed to convene into an impeachment court  for the on Tuesday, June 10. 

This is ahead of the initial schedule agreed upon by senators at the plenary on Monday which sets the convening date on Wednesday June 11.
