MANILA, Philippines 鈥� The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) has recorded a decrease in the number of crime incidents in schools in 2024.

In a forum on Tuesday, Police Lt. Col. Vicente Bumalay Jr., chief of the district operations and plans division, said that the number of crime incidents the QCPD logged in 2024 was 21, lower than the record in 2023 with 45 incidents.

鈥淭his is down by 46%, which is proof that the QCPD鈥檚 crime response and enhanced police presence are effective,鈥� Bumalay said in a mix of Filipino and English.

鈥淎ll these cases are either cleared or solved,鈥� he added, mostly in Filipino.

Bumalay likewise said that, based on their data, some of the usual cases they handled in schools were qualified theft, robbery, and gender-based sexual harassment.

He said that the cases recorded were from both private and public schools, without specifying if the persons involved were teachers or students.

Meanwhile, Bumalay said that the QCPD will deploy 450 police personnel in Quezon City to ensure the safety of the students at the start of the school year 2025 to 2026.

The Department of Education recently announced that the classes will start on June 16. /jpv
