MANILA, Philippines — The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted over 1,400 tons of sulfur dioxide in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Tuesday.
In Phivolcs’ latest 24-hour monitoring, Kanlaon released a total of 1,494 tons of sulfur dioxide, significantly lower than the 3,958-ton record set on Monday.
Five volcanic earthquakes were recorded at the volcano, higher than the previous count of three.
Phivolcs also reported that the plume was obscured and the volcano edifice remained inflated.

Kanlaon’s alert status remains at Alert Level 3, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.
With this, Phivolcs has recommended the evacuation of residents within a six-kilometer radius of Kanlaon. The flying of any aircraft near the volcano is also prohibited.
The public is also warned of potential volcanic hazards, including:
- Sudden explosive eruptions
- Lava flows or effusions
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density currents
- Rockfalls
- Lahars during heavy rainfall
