MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday vowed to look into the rehabilitation of “Marcos-type” school buildings.
A Marcos-type school building is a prefabricated design that was popular during the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. It is characterized by steel rafters and ordinary galvanized iron roofing.
Marcos, along with Education Secretary Sonny Angara, led the kickoff of Brigada Eskwela 2025 in Bulacan province. They inspected Barihan Elementary School in Malolos City and Tibagan Elementary School in San Miguel.

In a chance interview at Tibagan Elementary School, Marcos shared his observations after inspecting the school.
“A Marcos-type school building, too. The Marcos-type school buildings were supposed to be replaced after 20 to 30 years… their lifespan is only 20 to 30 years. So, it’s good that they are still being used,” he said.
“We really have to look into the rehabilitation of many of them,” he added.
The Department of Education said many Marcos-type buildings still stand today and are being continuously rehabilitated by the agency.
Before the interview, Marcos and Angara reviewed the proposed construction plans for flood-prone Barihan Elementary School. They also joined parent volunteers in installing a brand-new blackboard in one of the classrooms.
They witnessed the installation of a new Smart television at Tibagan Elementary School.
These activities at both schools were part of the preparations for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, which begins on June 16./mcm
