LUCENA CITY, Philippines — A motorcyclist was shot and wounded in an alleged shootout with police after evading a checkpoint in Taytay, Rizal, on Sunday, June 8.

A report from the Police Regional Office 4A released Monday said officers were conducting “Oplan Sita,” a routine anti-criminality operation, when they attempted to stop a motorcycle rider, identified only as “Jason,” at around 11:50 a.m. in Barangay Sta. Ana.

The rider reportedly ignored the officers and sped away, prompting a police officer to give chase. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly opened fire, prompting the officer to return fire and hit the suspect in the right leg.

Rescuers brought the injured rider to Amang Rodriguez Medical Center in Marikina City for treatment.

Police said the suspect, a construction worker, was found carrying an undocumented .38-caliber revolver loaded with three bullets. He also lacked a driver’s license, and his motorcycle was not registered with the Land Transportation Office.

The rider is now under hospital arrest and faces charges including illegal possession of a firearm and violation of the election gun ban.
