MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the Duterte family is not his “personal enemies,” stressing that they had “roles to play.”

Torre said this in a radio interview over dzMM on Wednesday night, when he was asked if he was open to reconciling with the Dutertes. Patriarch and former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and turned over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) by a team led by the now-PNP chief.

“They’re not my personal enemies. We don’t take things personal here. All the rest, everything is just part of doing our job. We have our roles to play. And we are just playing it in accordance with the script that was given to us by life,” Torre said in mixed Filipino and English.

“We are law enforcers, so we just have to enforce the law. They, on the other hand, have their own roles to fulfill. Now, if they choose to play it so that they criticize us, there’s no problem with that. There’s nothing personal about it,” the PNP chief added.

Torre, then a major general and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director, led the enforcement of the ICC arrest warrant against former President Rodrigo Duterte last March.

The Duterte patriarch is accused of crimes against humanity allegedly committed during his administration’s war on drugs, which killed an estimated 12,000 to 30,000 people.

Torre was announced the next PNP chief in a Palace briefing last May 29 by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, stressing that the selection was “based on merit.”

Last Saturday, speaking to supporters on a trip to visit his father in the Hague, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte said Torre’s appointment was “based on favors.”

Torre hit back in a Palace briefing earlier on Wednesday, pointing out that then-President Duterte appointed then-one-star general Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa to be his first PNP chief./mr
