Kanlaon Volcano emits over 4,600 tons of sulfur dioxide in 24 hours

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted 4,633 tons of sulfur dioxide over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Wednesday.
The latest figure is significantly higher than Tuesday’s recorded emission of 1,609 tons.

Phivolcs’ latest 24-hour monitoring also recorded 16 volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano, down from 38 in the previous period.
The agency also said the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, with continuous degassing observed and a 500-meter-high plume generated, drifting west.
Kanlaon’s alert status remains under Alert Level 3, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.
The public is advised to be cautious of potential volcanic hazards, including:
- Sudden explosive eruptions
- Lava flows or effusions
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density currents
- Rockfalls
- Lahars during heavy rainfall

Phivolcs has recommended the evacuation of residents within a six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit. Flying of any aircraft close to the volcano is also prohibited./mcm
