MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, or habagat, is expected to continue bringing rain across Luzon on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said there is a high chance of rain over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, the Ilocos Region, Abra, Zambales, and Bataan due to the habagat.

“There are scattered thunderstorms that may still cause flooding and landslides,” he added.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms are also expected in Palawan due to the habagat.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain in the morning and a chance of thunderstorms from afternoon to evening.

As for the Visayas, Estareja said partly cloudy to cloudy skies are forecast to persist for the rest of the day.

“As early as this morning, there is a chance of thunderstorms, especially over Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Central Visayas. Thunderstorms are also possible in the afternoon and evening,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mindanao is expected to remain affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), an area where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.

Estareja said rain showers are expected in Western and Southern Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the provinces of Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with a chance of isolated rain showers from afternoon to evening, would persist in the rest of Mindanao.

Estareja said there are currently no typhoons or low-pressure areas being monitored inside or outside the Philippine area of responsibility./mcm
