Torre aims for 100% use of body cams, radios, communications tech

MANILA, Philippines — New Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III said he aimed to fully utilize the law enforcement agency’s body cameras, radios and communications technology.
Torre took over command of the PNP in a ceremony in Camp Crame on Monday, vowing to further modernize the police force’s technology.
“We want 100-percent utilization of the body camera. We want 100-percent utilization of the body camera. We want to make sure that the utilization of our radios is at 100 percent, of our communication equipment,” Torre said in a press briefing after the ceremony.

“Before procuring new equipment, before spending on equipment, we will make sure that the current equipment that we have will be maximized to the fullest,” he added.

Torre credited his predecessor, now retired former PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, for procuring new equipment during his tenure.
The new PNP chief also stressed that the police force had to adapt quickly to technologies to keep up with emerging trends in crime.
“We may need to repurpose things a bit, repurpose some units or reevaluate the directions of what they’ve done,” Torre said.
“This is to ensure that, for our fellow countrymen, while the modus operandi of our enemies change, our response changes with it,” he added. /cb
