MANILA, Philippines — The woman who crawled out from a sewer in Makati City will receive P80,000 worth of livelihood assistance, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Friday.
In a statement, DSWD said the aid that will be turned over to the person, given the alias “Rose,” aims to help her start a ‘sari-sari’ [small] store, which is her preferred work.

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian met Rose on Thursday in the department’s Pag-abot Center in Pasay City.
“Our intervention with Rose is that she dreams of owning a store, and according to our social worker’s assessment, she is capable of it,” Gatchalian said.

The DSWD chief also said the department intends to help Rose’s partner, Jerome.
“She will also bring to us her partner Jerome. We may be able to help him because he knows welding,” said Gatchalian.
“So maybe we can help him buy a welding machine so that both their incomes will be more stable,” he added.
Rose collects and sells recyclable garbage for a living.
She said that she does not live in the sewer.
She explained that she only went there after her small blade cutter fell into the drain.
The DSWD said Rose and Jerome lived along a street along Pasong Tamo in Makati City for a year, “but [they] persevered to earn and [to] be able to rent a space where they could stay.”
On Tuesday, a post about Rose went viral after she was seen crawling out from a sewer.
Netizens associated her with a Japanese horror novel, movie and television fictional character named “Sadako.”/apl
