Phivolcs: Kanlaon emits 1,515 tons of sulfur dioxide in 24 hours

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island has released 1,515 tons of sulfur dioxide in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) monitored on Thursday.
The figure is higher than the 1,044 tons recorded on Wednesday, Phivolcs said in its latest report.

The volcano, meanwhile, logged fewer volcanic earthquakes, from 22 on Wednesday to 19 on Thursday.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect for Kanlaon, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest.

Kanlaon also generated a weak 100-meter-high plume, which drifted northwest over the past 24 hours.
The volcano edifice remains inflated, Phivolcs noted.
With this, Phivolcs warned the public of potential hazards, such as:
- Sudden explosive eruptions
- Lava flows or effusions
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density currents
- Rockfalls
- Lahars during heavy rainfall
Phivolcs reiterated that residents within Kanlaon’s six-kilometer danger zone should evacuate.
The flying of any aircraft close to Kanlaon is also prohibited, Phivolcs said. /das
