MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area (LPA) was spotted outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and is forecast to bring rain showers over parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Wednesday.
In its latest weather forecast at 5 a.m., Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA was last seen in the West Philippine Sea near Pag-asa Island.
“This low-pressure area is not expected to become a typhoon. It will continue to move away from our country, and it is possible that it would dissipate in the next 24 hours,” Estareja said in Filipino.
Despite this, he said that the trough or the extension of the LPA would bring heavy rains in most parts of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Estareja said that easterlies — or the warm winds in the Pacific Ocean— would continue to affect the eastern side of the country, so hot weather conditions are still likely to persist.
“In extreme northern Luzon, there is the frontal system or the line where the warm easterlies and the cold winds from the north meet, so the chances of rain in the next few days over extreme northern Luzon are also high,” he also said.
Even though the country is forecast to experience rain showers, no typhoons are expected to develop or enter PAR in the coming days, Estareja said.
According to Estareja, a high chance of rain showers is expected over Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands due to the effect of the frontal system. Scattered rains and thunderstorms may also persist, especially from afternoon to evening.
Light to moderate with at times of heavy rains is forecast in Southern Luzon, particularly in Mindoro provinces and Romblon, brought about by the trough of the LPA.
For the rest of Mimaropa (Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), the Bicol Region, some areas in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), as well as Aurora, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a chance of rain showers is expected from morning to evening.
Fair weather conditions in the morning to noon and hot weather from afternoon to evening, with a chance of rain and isolated thunderstorms, are forecast over Metro Manila and the rest of Central Luzon and Northern Luzon.
Residents in Palawan, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Central Visayas would experience rain showers and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA. Estareja added that mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains may persist in the eastern portions of the Visayas region.
As for the Mindanao region, the weather bureau said that a high chance of rain within the next 24 hours is still forecast due to the effect of the LPA trough. /das/abc
