Senator’s son, nephew assaulted in Boracay

ISLAND LINK An all-weather bridge project envisioned by the Department of PublicWorks and Highways (DPWH) as a way to ease congestion on Boracay Island and provide a vital link for the movement of essential goods and supplies is facing local opposition due to its projected impact on the livelihood of some residents and on the marine environment. MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada said that his son and nephew were assaulted by three individuals while on vacation in early Saturday morning.

In a statement on Sunday, Estrada confirmed that his son Julian and nephew Jefferelly Vitug’s vacation was “marred by an act of violence.”

“As a father and uncle, it is natural that I will be worried when the bad news reached me. So I quickly went to find out what had happened and how they were doing,” he said in Filipino.

“No parent or relative ever wants to hear that their loved ones have been victims of such a senseless act in a place that should be a friendly community and a source of relaxation,” he added.

Estrada did not provide other details regarding the case but disclosed that charges were already lodged against the three suspects.

“I trust that the proper authorities will investigate this case thoroughly and ensure that justice is served,” he said.

“My family and I are grateful that our loved ones are safe now, but we hope incidents like this serve as a reminder of the need to create a safer environment for everyone,” the senator concluded.
