PCSO: Among 1st agencies to conduct relief ops in flood-hit Maguindanao

MANILA, Philippines — Acting on orders of President Marcos to immediately send help and assistance to thousands of residents affected by massive floodings in Maguindanao, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) today conducted relief operations in the areas greatly impacted by the calamity.
PCSO General Manager Mel Robles said they have quickly mobilized their Authorized Agent Corp.—5A Royal Gaming OPC in Maguindanao del Sur—to spearhead in distributing food packs to the flood victims at an evacuation center in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur.
The said relief efforts were conducted in collaboration with the PNP and the local government of Datu Piang.
The PCSO has sent 1,000 food packs consisting of 5 kilos of rice instant noodles, canned goods, noodles and potable water each pack, which were distributed today.
GM Robles also announced that 2500 “Charitimba” (pails with relief items) will be airlifted tomorrow which will be distributed to the affected residents.
“Our commitment is unwavering. We will not stop until we see to it that all the affected residents have already received necessary food and medical assistance,” GM Robles vowed.
The town of Datu Piang in Maguindanao del Sur has been placed under a state of calamity due to the massive floods brought about by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) that hit the area in the past days.
Almost 8,000 families in 16 barangays are affected by the floods, according to Datu Piang Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
Cyrus Urbano, Koronadal City disaster risk reduction and management officer, reported that at least two have died due to the flooding.
He said Christian Pederiso, 28, a delivery rider, and Jessa Mae Huesca, 24, a teacher, were crossing a river in Barangay Cacub when they were swept away by rampaging waters on Tuesday afternoon.
Their bodies were subsequently recovered downstream. /cb
