MANILA, Philippines — Secretary Rex Gatchalian of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) submitted his courtesy resignation to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos on Thursday.
This gesture comes after Marcos ordered all cabinet secretaries to resign, citing his administration’s recalibration following the 2025 midterm elections.

In his letter to the president, Gatchalian noted that his resignation would be “effective immediately” following the directive.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work in this position for two (2) years and three (3) months,” Gatchalian said in his letter to Marcos.
“I deeply appreciate the trust and confidence that was bestowed upon me, and to have served the people under this administration,” he added.
Gatchalian also expressed his gratitude “for the opportunity of serving our Filipino people.”
Marcos appointed Gatchalian as DSWD secretary in January 2023.
