DOJAC, Kababaihan, 1Life, and Reseta extend health services to moms at CIW

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice Action Center (DOJAC), Kababaihan, 1Life Healthcare, and Reseta Health came together to provide healthcare services to 300 mothers at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong last May 15, 2025.

Organized by Kababaihan, a group dedicated to advocating for women’s rights, the medical mission offered a wide range of essential services. 1Life Healthcare provided consultations, X-rays, ultrasounds, ECGs, complete bloodwork, urinalysis, and take-home medicines for the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).

Reseta Health supported the initiative by bringing in specialist doctors, including cardiologists and OB-GYNs, and donating OBGYN medicines and topicals.

DOJ Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez, who oversees DOJAC, emphasized the importance of the mission, particularly thanks to the involvement of partners like 1Life and Reseta.

“What makes this mission special is the diagnostic consultations and testing, which allow us to treat the women PDLs immediately after receiving their results,” she explained.

Carlos Miguel “Migo” Ochoa, Director of Operations at 1Life, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate on the activity.

“This opportunity reminds us that health is a basic human right, and dignity knows no boundaries. We remain committed to reaching the underserved, amplifying compassion, and ensuring no one is left behind in our advocacy towards accessible pro active healthcare for all.”

Seven doctors, including Dr. KC Halili, one of the founders of Reseta Health, attended to the beneficiaries.

Reseta Health, a female-led company, conducts monthly medical missions with a focus on making healthcare sustainable for all, especially women.

“Even though their freedom is limited, health remains an equalizer. Everyone deserves access to healthcare,” Dr. Halili said.

In addition to the medical consultations, Dr. Halili led a health talk to raise awareness about disease prevention.

To mark Mother’s Day, Reseta distributed roses to all the mothers, ensuring they felt appreciated.

CIW Deputy Superintendent Marites Ebardo expressed her gratitude for the comprehensive nature of the medical mission.

“We are truly thankful for this holistic approach. It means so much to our PDLs,” she said.

Along with healthcare services, DOJAC also provided legal aid to PDLs. Gutierrez explained that the medical mission complements DOJAC’s regular legal services.

“During our town hall meetings with the PDLs, one of their top requests is accessible healthcare,” she said.

“We plan to expand this initiative to other penal institutions across the country, as healthcare is a right that everyone deserves.”
