DOH: Keeping watch on Covid-19 trends in region

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday said it was “actively monitoring” COVID-19 trends in Southeast Asia, including the recently reported increase in cases in some specific areas in the region.

“We are actively coordinating through established mechanisms like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. This gives us verified information, boosting readiness even as we see no cause for alarm,” the DOH said in a statement.

Data released by the DOH showed that, as of May 3, there was an 87-percent decrease in cases, including fatalities, in the country compared to the same period in 2024.

There were 1,774 COVID-19 cases reported so far this year compared to 14,074 last year, with fatality rate of 1.13 percent.

Last four weeks

The DOH said recent trends also indicated a “slight decrease” in reported cases over the past three to four weeks.

From 71 cases in the week of March 23 to April 5, they went down to 65 in the April 6 to April 19 period.

The department said it would provide timely updates on its official channels “should the situation evolve,’’ as it advised the public to continue taking precautions, like wearing face masks when inside health-care facilities and other preventive measures. —Jerome Aning
