MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday conferred the 2023 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) award on nine outstanding traditional artists for their contributions to preserving and promoting cultural identity through traditional arts, crafts, and storytelling.
The GAMABA was established through Republic Act No. 7355 to honor Filipino traditional artists who demonstrate excellence and dedication to their craft.

“Ang ating pagkakakilanlan bilang Pilipino ay hinubog ng mayamang kultura at tradisyong minana natin sa ating mga ninuno–kayamanang ating iniingatan at ipapasa sa susunod na mga henerasyon,” Marcos said in his speech.
(Our identity as Filipinos has been shaped by the rich culture and traditions we inherited from our ancestors—a treasure we safeguard and will pass on to future generations.)
“Be assured that this Administration, through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, will continue to champion traditional arts, indigenous knowledge, and cultural sustainability,” he said.
In December 2023, President Marcos announced the names of the nine awardees.

Below are the nine awardees and the categories in which they were honored:
- Adelita Bagcal of Ilocos Norte and Rosie Sula of South Cotabato – for preserving oral tradition and chanting.
- Abina Coguit of Agusan del Sur and Amparo Mabanag of Mountain Province – intricate embroidery and beadwork
- Marife Ganahon of Bukidnon, Samporonia Madanlo of Davao Oriental, and Barbara Ofong of South Cotabato – mastery in weaving using native materials and detailed patterns
- Hadja Sakinur-ain Delasas of Tawi-Tawi – traditional dance, and
- Bundos Fara of South Cotabato – brass casting using fire and metal to create enduring pieces that symbolize cultural pride and identity
