
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was detected off Northern Samar and jolted the municipality of Mapanas and adjacent towns Wednesday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at 12:41 p.m. some 91 kilometers northeast of Mapanas.
It was felt at Intensity II in Mapanas, Gamay, Lapinig, Laoang and Palapag, Northern Samar.
It had a depth of 10 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, said Phivolcs.
Damage is unlikely but aftershocks are expected, Phivolcs said.Â
