Mati airport, originally named Imelda Marcos Airport, was built in 1976 during the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., father of President Bongbong Marcos.
Following the ouster and downfall of Marcos Sr., however, the airport has remained 鈥渦nderutilized and undeveloped for decades,鈥 serving only as a secondary facility in the Davao region, according to the MIO.
Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat welcomed the new project.
鈥淭he upgraded airport will not only provide a seamless travel experience for passengers but also position Mati City as a gateway to economic growth and tourism in Mindanao,鈥 said Rabat.
