Magnitude 6.1 quake hits Zamboanga del Norte; aftershocks predicted

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck a town in Zamboanga del Norte on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The state volcanologist initially reported the earthquake as having a magnitude of 6.1 in its 11:45 a.m. bulletin.

But at 12:16 p.m. (noon time), it revised the bulletin to magnitude 5.4.

The tectonic quake occurred at 11:41 a.m.

Its epicenter was located some five kilometers (kms.) east of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte.

The tremor had a depth of focus of 43 kms.

The latest Phivolcs advisory also reported the following earthquake intensities:


Instrumental Intensity IV was likewise recorded in Zamboanga City.

Aftershocks are possible, though no damage to property is expected from the tremor.
