Kanlaon Volcano emits more sulfur dioxide, logs 37 quakes

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano released more sulfur dioxide on Sunday, January 5, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
According to Phivolcs, its latest 24-hour monitoring showed that Kanlaon emitted 3,639 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, slightly higher than the 3,469 tonnes recorded on Saturday, January 4.
The volcano also produced a voluminous plume that rose 500 meters and drifted southwest and west, the state meteorologist added.

Mt. Kanlaon likewise registered 37 volcanic earthquakes from Sunday to Monday midnight, Phivolcs noted.
Kanlaon Volcano, located in the Negros region, remains under Alert Level 3, indicating intensified or magmatic unrest.

Under Alert Level 3, Phivolcs warned of the following potential hazards:
- Sudden explosive eruption
- Lava flow or effusion
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density current
- Rockfall
- Lahars during heavy rains
Phivolcs repeated its notice that flying any aircraft near the volcano is strictly prohibited.
