MANILA, Philippines 鈥� The Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a total of 1,126 show-cause orders (SCOs) against erring motor vehicle owners and drivers in 2024.

According to the LTO, 508 of the total SCOs involved violations of the provisions of the Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, including improper person to operate a motor vehicle that is punishable by either suspension or revocation of driver鈥檚 license.

The LTO also said that 448 SCOs were related to the use of fake licenses; 74, on the Anti-Distracted Driving Act; 69, on road incidents reported to the LTO Central Command Center; and 27, on the use of double licenses.

Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the LTO was able to issue many SCOs this year due to active social media monitoring of traffic rules and regulations violations, including cases of road rage.

鈥淎ctive social media monitoring, and even active monitoring of the traditional media, in our efforts to perform the LTO鈥檚 mandate of ensuring road safety is one of the new normal in the agency,鈥� LTO chief Mendoza said in a statement.

鈥淎lmost all Filipinos have social media accounts and smartphones and they have become the eyes and ears of the LTO against abusive motorists. What they post on social media serves as our basis to investigate,鈥� he also said in mixed Filipino and English.

Mendoza noted that nearly all of the SCOs issued resulted in the imposition of penalties against those involved, including suspension of driver鈥檚 license and motor vehicle registration, and even revocation of the driver鈥檚 license.

However, he expressed hope that fewer SCOs will be issued in 2025 as it would mean fewer cases of traffic offenses.

鈥淔or 2025, our New Year鈥檚 wish is that we would issue fewer SCOs, or we would no longer issue any SCO because this means that all our motorists are now abiding traffic rules and regulations,鈥� Mendoza said.
