AURORA, Philippines — Sen. Sonny Angara said he is “open” to being the next chief of the Department of Education (DepEd).

In an ambush interview on Monday, Angara was asked if he was willing to take the helm of DepEd after Vice President Sara Duterte quit the Cabinet post.

“Opo (Yes). Open tayo kung sakaling pagkatiwalaan (We’re open if given the trust),” Angara told reporters in Baler, Aurora, where the senator attended celebrations for the 22nd Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.

However, he clarified that he has not yet received any offers for the position.

Senators have been expressing support for Angara to be the next DepEd secretary, citing his extensive educational background.

Vice President Duterte resigned as DepEd chief on June 19. She did not provide a definite reason for quitting and only explained that her action was not a sign of weakness, as it was stirred by compassion for teachers and students.

Last June 29, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. admitted that it’s challenging to pick the next DepEd head and gave himself more time to decide.

Marcos also acknowledged as “valid concerns” various sector’s calls for him to name an educator, administrator, or historical professor as the next DepEd chief.

However, he noted there is no shortlist for the next DepEd secretary, as he is looking at everyone qualified.

“It turns out it’s harder than I thought because we absolutely have to get it right. So I’m giving myself more time,” he said, contrary to his earlier statement that he would name the new education head soon.
