African swine fever in five villages

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—African swine fever (ASF) has now infected pigs in five villages of Camiguin province, said Gov. Xavier Jesus Romualdo.

In a statement on Friday, Romualdo said blood samples taken from pigs in the villages of Agoho, Balbagon and Poblacion of Mambajao town have tested positive for the ASF virus.

ASF was first detected in Mambajao’s Pandan village on July 2. By July 6, pigs in Soro-Soro, Balbagon and Poblacion were also found to be infected with the disease.

Agoho was the latest village where ASF had spread.

Last week, Romualdo had ordered the province sealed off from the entry of pork and pork products from other areas. He noted that veterinary authorities earlier suspected that the virus may have been brought by residents who brought in pork dishes from a fiesta in a town in Misamis Oriental.
