Woman hurt in crossfire as crime group, gov’t team clash in Zamboanga Sibugay

ZAMBOANGA CITY—A woman was wounded while a group of crime suspects escaped after a brief clash with policemen and soldiers in the town of Malangas, Zamboanga Sibugay province on Wednesday (April 14).

Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Ylagan, Zamboanga Peninsula police chief, said Rosario Capa Matito, 58, was hit by a stray bullet in the arm as the suspects traded shots with the law enforcers at the village of Maulom past 8 a.m.

The law enforcement team, from two police units and one Army battalion, was in Maulom to arrest a certain Uya Daman Monagen.

As the government forces reached the village, however, at least 10 men opened fire, leading to the 10-minute clash.

The armed men were believed to be followers of a suspected local crime boss, a certain Esmael Sanday aka Boy Negro.

The gunfight ended with the suspects fleeing.
