MANILA, Philippines — Full operations of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) may be restored in two to three months, an official of the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said Monday.

Since last week, the LRT-2 had only been servicing passengers from Cubao station to Recto station and back after a fire damaged a power rectifier between Anonas and Katipunan stations.

Santolan, Katipunan and Anonas stations have not been operational since the fire incident.

LRTA spokesperson Hernando Cabrera said that the completion period for the repairs and parts replacement could be whittled down to two to three months from the initial assessment of nine months, if parts could be replaced “component-by-component.”

However, this still depends on the assessment of the LRT-2’s engineers and technical team, Cabrera added.

“Nagsasagawa na ng component level na assessment, at may possibility, with the component level replacement at restoration, ‘yung nine months natin, baka pwedeng two to three months na lang yung ating tinitingnan na timeline, mas mabilis [Component level assessment is being conducted and there is a possibility that the initial assessment of restoration completion will be down to two to three months],” Cabrera said in an interview over DZRH.

“We’re hoping na imbis na palitan natin ng buo at bago [power rectifier], eh magcomponent-by-component lang tayo which is mas mabilis at mas maigsi yung panahon na gugugulin [We’re hoping that instead of replacing the power rectifier completely, we could do a component-by-component replacement which may quicken the time for repairs],” he added.

Cabrera earlier said that it would take nine months before the full operations of the LRT-2 could be restored as spare parts for the repairs would have to be imported from other countries. /jpv
